After so long of not doing anything on this site, I finally got a commission. I was asked to do the Han Solo pictured on the comic cover. You can be the judge of how it turned out. It was fun to have something to do for someone else again.

I haven't done much on the project I outlined here the last time I posted, but I do have a picture I can post of a plaque I made for a co-worker. It is a plaque he asked me to make for his wife for their anniversary. It took me a long time to complete it (longer than it should have, in fact). I have intentionally blurred her name and the anniversary date, but the rest of it should be readable

The Huntress

I have really run out of pictures to show and haven't had much of a chance to work on other plaques, so unfortunately this site has suffered. Here is one last one that I found, it features one of DCs most interesting characters, The Huntress. This picture comes from an issue of the Birds of Prey comic, but I don't remember exactly which issue. I do remember it included Catwoman and The Black Canary as well. (Of course, most of this particular comic features Canary!)

Looks like I'm going to have to find some more time to devote to this hobby so I can have some more pictures to post here.

Here is a plaque I did for some friends to give to their neighbor as a gift. The middle of the plaque is taken from the business card of the recipient and has his family crest. The pictures were taken from some that he had hanging on his wall in the house. I have blurred the name of the recipient for privacy purposes.

The Fantastic Four

I found some pictures of plaques that I had misplaced. I thought they were gone for good. This one is of the Fantastic Four. It is the cover scene to Fantastic Four #178 (Vol 1).

This was one of the first plaques I ever made, you can tell that I was still learning the art by the rough way it is done. This was also before I learned to put color on the plaques. I think sometime down the road when I have no further commissions I may do this again, just to make it better, and in color.

I had a lot of time this weekend so I managed to accomplish a lot on this plaque. It is all burned and ready to add the color. As you can see, it has turned out great. It'd be fantastic if I just left it this way. It's hard to do a bad plaque when it features the work of George Perez.

I have no current commissions so I decided to do one for myself. Because I think George Perez (accent on the first E!) is the greatest comic artist to every put something down on paper, I found a picture he had drawn as my current project. I found the picture on the cover of wizard magazine. It's awesome (but then what else would you expect from THE George Perez?)

I'm going to put it on an oval plaque, pictured here.

Here it is. The Justice League plaque, completed and delivered to the customer. She was very pleased with it.

This picture isn't as good as usual because the lighting conditions were not good. I wanted to deliver the item so I took the picture anyway. It doesn't do the plaque justice.

Here is an update on the current commission of the Justice League plaque. It has been almost a month since my last update and so it has been a long time coming. I am ready to add color.

As you can see, I have altered the picture from the original. As stated in a previous post, there just wasn't enough detail in the original picture on some of the background characters so, in order to make it a nice plaque I changed it.

Here it is. The picture has been transferred to the wood and the burning is in progress. Wonderwoman and Batman are the only ones to have received the treatment so far. Because the original picture didn't have much detail for the characters in the background, I substituted for different pictures of them.

Another masterpiece of artwork by the awesome "talent of Ballent". DC should have never let this artist get away from the Catwoman comics. She hasn't been the same since. With his art, even the most mediocre of story lines shined.

This is a plaque that I made for a co-worker to give to her son for Christmas about 3 years ago. She chose the picture (I believe I would have chosen a different one, I don't really like this pose very much. It was her plaque, though and I aim to please.) When I had completed this, another co-worker asked for one when she saw it. Her version had a web behind him. I didn't keep a picture of it.

The ever popular Catwoman

Here is one of the big favorites with the fans (as you can tell by the number of plaques featuring Catwoman that I have posted the picture in this blog.) This picture was taken from the cover of a Wizard magazine and I believe the artist is Jim Balent. Balent's Catwoman was the best one to date, much better than the current version, which in my opinion is the worst one ever created.

The Wall Crawler, Spider-man

Here is a plaque with a picture of Spider-man clinging to a wall. The person who requested this downloaded it off the internet, but I don't have the reference. Whoever drew the picture was an excellent artist. I particularly like the effect of the shadow on the wall.

I am getting to the end of the pictures I have of previous plaques. I'm going to have to get busy and make some more. I hope to have an update on the current commission by this weekend.

Rogue, The X-men's beautiful Southern Belle

Here is a picture of the ever popular Rogue. This picture was taken from a trading card. I believe Joe Jusko was the artist, but I can't say for sure.

Rogue started out as a villain, in fact she was the one who stole Ms Marvel's powers back in Avengers Annual #10 I believe it was. She has since become one of the popular X-men members.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out why she's a favorite with the fan boys. This character is requested a lot and you can see why. It comes really close to violating my no nudity/pornographic pictures rule.

This was part of a set. The person who requested it also requested a companion plaque with Lady Death.

Lets go Nova

Here is an interesting character. I remember when he was introduced in the 70s and was supposed to be the next Spider-man. We all know that didn't happen, in fact Nova faded away for awhile after his book was cancelled. He has been revived a couple of times but has never really been one of Marvel's mainstays.

This picture was a challenge. I needed to show the image of speed as it was depicted in the picture supplied. That's not always an easy thing to do when you are dealing with burning the picture. (The color helps a little though.)

All in all, the picture turned out pretty well.

Here is, the update on the current commission. It is hard to see right now because so far it is just drawn on the plaque. I have to put Green Lantern in the upper right corner still, then I can begin the process of actually burning it.

If you compare it to the picture in the first post regarding this plaque you will see that only the front three characters are from the original picture. I found that the characters in the background did not have enough detail to make them look good so I found different pictures of the characters in similar poses to the original. It should be a much better product at the end this way.

Here's a classic. I took this picture from the cover of Amazing Spider-man #122. (Follow that link, there is a pretty good write-up of the issue there and a full color picture of the cover.) This was an interesting scene to do. There is some good action shown in the picture and I like the way the artist (I beleive it was Gil Kane) has it laid out. I had fun reproducing his work. I should probably do this again in color, just for the fun of it.

The Avengers' beautiful Scarlet Witch

Here is a nice picture of the Avengers' witchy member. When used correctly she is one of the more interesting characters in the Marvel Universe. Her history is very interesting, she went from being the shy timid "protected" sister of Quicksilver to becoming one of the only people who can kick Ultron's butt!

I haven't read the "Disassembled" storyline but I understand she was turned into a butt kicking badguy. I read a few reviews that blasted Marvel for doing this to her. I guess it worked, they got their readers to react.

I don't know where the guy who asked for this got the picture.

Continuing with X-men characters, Psylocke

Here is a nice picture of Psylocke. It was taken from a trading card (sorry I don't remember which card series). I found it to be an excellent rendering of this character and I enjoyed making it. The person who requested it was pleased also.

Wolverine captured my attention in the X-men comics in the 70s when I was a kid. He quickly became my favorite superhero (and that was before it was cool!) I enjoyed making this plaque for a friend.

This is the way I like him, I have seen some artists give him an extremely feral look, but to me that takes away from his character. (Just my $.02.)

Spongebob's best friend Patrick

This guy is one of the most entertaining characters on television. I started collecting "Patrick" things (figures, pencils, christmas ornaments, etc) when I was told at work that I reminded a friend of Patrick. I had no idea who he was at the time so I asked my daughter when I got home. She was much younger and was watching Spongebob as often as we would permit. She informed me that Patrick was "Spongebob's stupid friend, why?" I mumbled something about being "curious" and then couldn't wait to get to work the next day.

We laughed so hard the next day that my sides hurt, and ever since the Patrick items have been accumulating at my house. Even my wife buys Patrick stuff now.

Benjamin "The Thing" Grimm and the Incredible Hulk

Here is a plaque based on a picture drawn by my favorite artist, George Perez. This picture was take from the last panel of Fantastic Four issue #166.

In my opinion, Mr Perez is the greatest comic artist ever to work in the field. I enjoy reproducing his work more than any other artist (as can be seen by the number of plaques I have done based on his work.)

He has worked on just about every title worth reading from both DC Comics and Marvel Comics.

This is a plaque featuring Shi, a real fanboy pleaser. This was a fun plaque to do, and as you can see there is quite a bit of detail, especially in her clothing (what there is of it). I have yet to make a color plaque of this character, hmm, maybe I should put that on my list of things to do.

Marvel Comics' Elektra

This is a plaque that I created almost 6 years ago. I just re-discovered the picture and in checking my previous postings I see that it hasn't been posted before. The gentleman who asked me to make this one supplied the picture and it is one of the best I have seen of Elektra. I'm not sure where he got the picture, but I have never been able to find it since.

Banshee of X-men fame

Here is a nice picture of Banshee from the X-men. I don't think I've posted it here before. It was commissioned three or four years ago.

Banshee is one of the "original" characters of the New X-men when they were revived in the 70s. He joined at the time Wolverine, Storm, Nightcrawler, Colusus, and Thunderbird did. If I remember right he was the first to leave the group (not counting Thunderbird who died after two or three issues). His sonic cry was damaged when his throat became injured. Anyway, here is a plaque featuring him after his return.

Here it is, the finished product. Now I can get it to the person who asked for it. It's been WAY to long since I started it. I've got to find more time to do this. It's very relaxing and I could sure use that right now.

As I stated when I began this project, the Green Lantern that is in the original picture has been replaced with Hal Jordan (the only TRUE Green Lantern in my book, but then he's the one I grew up with).

Here is the latest picture of the plaque of the Justice League of America that I have been working on. It features the cover art of Flash issue # 209 (a race between Superman and Flash). I have added color to the characters and only need to add it to the background and I can give it to the lady who asked me to make it. It has been a long time and she has been patient. Usually it doesn't take me this long to do a picture.

Another commission update (finally)

Here is the latest on the commission I am working. It is now ready for color. The picture has been burned into the wood. I may even get this thing done sometime this year for the lady who requested it. I wish I could find more time to work on it.

I injured my right wrist yesterday and am wearing a brace on it, so that will slow me even more (not that I have been working on this thing with any great speed). I'll try to get an update sooner, for her sake if nothing else. I have another commission waiting so I need to get this one done and get started on the new one.

Immigration Officer Badge

Man, I have really got to find time to work on this hobby. I can't seem to get to it anymore, what with school, work, and family obligations. I miss it. I have just about run out of plaques to show that haven't already been posted here. I finally decided that I can show this plaque since the Immigration Inspector badge is no longer in use. I made this for a friend and co-worker. I have made several others for other friends, including Customs Inspector, Supervisory Immigration Inspector, Customs Agent, and Police officer. They usually turn out nice and they represent a lot of work.

At long last the burning has begun. The picture has been transferred to the wood, the Hal Jordan Green Lantern has been put in the picture in place of the Green Lantern on the original comic, and the burning of the picture unto the wood is started. As you can see, I have Flash done but none of the others yet. This is a delicate part of the process. Once mistake and I can ruin the whole plaque by letting the burner skip, burn to long in one place, or any number of other mistakes. At this point it is more than just an eraser to fix the problem. Once it is burned into the wood, it requires a good sanding to fix mistakes. That means starting over at the beginning! This thing has been months in the making and I don't think the person who requested it wants to wait another six months.

For anyone curious about the status of the work in progress (yes the one that I started back in July) I have included pictures of how much I have done. It is getting close to being ready to burn, no burning has occurred yet. Normally it doesn't take me this long to do a plaque, but I have been very busy with school and haven't had a lot of time to work on it, and the person who requested it is not in a hurry to get it. She has asked me the status, though. I have found a little time to work on it and hope to do more in the next couple of weeks. Any progress I make will be posted here.

I have included the picture that I am reproducing so you don't have to scramble back through archives to find it. There will be a difference in the picture that I do, it has been requested that Hal Jordan be the Green Lantern on the plaque.

Here is a plaque I made based on a picture of the Scarlet Witch drawn by George Perez. Mr. Perez is still the undisputed master in my mind, though there are some that come close. I really like the work done by Alex Ross also, but his work is next to impossible to reproduce as a woodburning.

Here is a plaque I made by request of Iron Man wearing his original, all golden armor. This is a pretty good picture showing how he started out. This is the armor he was wearing when he became one of the founding members of the Avengers.

Here is a plaque that a friend requested from me. This is a character in the Marvel universe called The Jack of Hearts. He was never my favorite character. I was first intoduced to him when he guest stared in The Increadible Hulk on one issue. He was then in Iron Man issues for awhile. The colors on this plaque really turned out nice.

LDS Prophets

This one is a little different than what you are used to seeing here. I burned this for a Christmas present for a good friend. It is entitled "Follow the Prophet" and it has the picture of four Prophets. Abraham, an Old Testament prophet is the first one. Nephi, a Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ prophet is the second. Joseph Smith, the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) church is the third. Gordon B. Hinckly, the current prophet and leader of the LDS Church is the fourth. I took the picture from a publication of the LDS Church which was used to teach children.

Here is a plaque that I made for a guy who never came back for it. I used a picture drawn by George Perez (who else) to make this picture. Because the original requester didn't' return I included it (at no extra charge) in an auction I had on Ebay.

Captain Marvel

Here is a picture that was a request. It is the "new" Captain Marvel. Again, it is a picture that I probably wouldn't have chosen to do on my own, but I turned out to really enjoy doing it. The sparkling star field effect of his costume was a challenge to make look good.

Catwoman again

Here is another picture done by the incredible Jim Balent. This is the picture on the cover of Catwoman #1. It is an incredible example of the talent that Mr. Balent brings to his art. It was also the first picture of Catwoman that I burned on a plaque.

Batman and Catwoman

Here is a picture I made into a clock. The original picture had Catwoman in a spotted cat outfit. She looked almost like cheetah in the picture. I like the costume that Balent put her in during his tenure on the magazine so I changed it for this clock. I like the change.

Here is a picture of Thor based on the splash page of Avengers # 66. This issue featured the return of Ultron and the supposed betrayal of the Avengers by The Vision. The art was done by Barry Smith, another of the great ones.

Here is a plaque I made for a co-worker. He had been in what I believe he called the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) and had a patch with this on it. He asked me to do a plaque of it. Like all of my plaques, this was done with a $12.00 burner from Walmart.

Catwoman wedding dress

Here are a couple of pictures of Catwoman wearing a wedding dress. These pictures were taken from the trade paperback The Catfiles. Catwoman is captured and is going to be forced into a wedding. One of the pictures is from the original cover of one of the Catwoman comics this TPB reprints and I believe the other was drawn for the TPB itself. These pictures are Balent artwork.

Avengers 160

Here is a picture from the cover of one of my favorite issues of the Avengers. In 160 the story of the relationship of The Vision, Wonderman and the Grim Reaper is explored in detail. The Grim Reaper, using technology supplied by Ultron, defeats a handful of Avengers and holds a trial to determine who is his real brother. Wonderman, seemingly back from the dead, or The Vision, who was programmed from Wonderman's brainwaves. The history of these three characters is explored through flashbacks and discussion among the characters. A very well written book featuring the art work of my personal favorite, George Perez.

Wolverine

Here is a picture of another fan favorite. This picture was drawn by John Byrne and was the cover of one of Wolverine's comics. I don't have the issue number handy and I'd have to do a serious search through my comics to find it. Here is a picture of Shi. I don't know much about this character, I don't read her comics. She makes a great picture though. I have yet to do one in color of her, but even monochrome she looks good.

Here is one of my favorite characters of all time. My daughters got me watching Sponge Bob and Patrick grabbed our hearts from the begining. I made this plaque for my niece and nephews who also like the show.

Here is a plaque with a family name on that I did for a gentleman I know. The only problem with this one is it is outside in the weather. The protective seal keeps out the rain, but the sun has faded the colored border now. I guess I should use paint instead of pencils for the outside ones. The rest of it still looks good.

Update on current commission

Here it is finally, an update on my current commission. I have The Flash drawn on the wood. I'll draw all of the characters and the background before I do any burning. The picture is light because the drawing is light. It'll get much darker with the woodburner. I also forgot to mention in my previous post regarding this picture, it was drawn by Micheal Turner.

Thor and Absorbing man

Here is another cover scene. This one was drawn by the incomparable John Buscema, one of the greatest in the comic industry. In my opinion he is second only to George Perez. This is from the cover of The Mighty Thor # 206 of Seventies vintage. Scenes like this, though they take awhile to do are a real pleasure to reproduce.

Superman with Emblem

I made this plaque for another co-worker. His last name is Clark. He had a tattoo with a similar picture (Superman over the emblem as pictured here.) He gave me the picture of his tattoo and asked me if I could do it for him. The Superman picture on his arm had very little detail and didn't look very good when I had it done. I showed it to him and asked him if I could do my own picture. (I had already seen this picture of Superman and thought it was a good one.) He agreed so I put this picture over the emblem and you can see the results. He was pleased with it. I was too.
